Posted on December 31st, 2010 by  |  Comments Off

There are many benefits to growing an indoor herb garden. It can be a rewarding first experience for beginning gardeners, or an excellent solution for any gardener with limited planting space. It is also a fun and efficient way for home cooks to keep fresh herbs at their fingertips.

Should you choose to give it a try, you will find some essential factors to think about. The very first step would be to discover the correct spot. It’s greatest have your garden inside a area that gets eight or a lot more hours of direct sunlight every day. If your garden isn’t obtaining sufficient sunlight, you are able to use grow lights or florescent work lights suspended 4 to six inches above the plants to augment the natural light. You are able to tell if your herbal remedies aren’t obtaining the light they require if the leaves become elongated, appear faded, or suddenly start to fall off the stems.

Once you have spot picked out, decide which herbs you want to grow. Look through nursery catalogs, consult nursery staff, or simply pick herbs you enjoy. If you are unsure, oregano, chives, mint, rosemary, basil, parsley, and thyme are all good bets. They are all commonly used in popular recipes and produce pleasing foliage and fragrances. As and added bonus, they are all hearty enough to be likely to transplant well outside, if you choose later to do so.

Many people enjoy Italian food so much that they spend their efforts on a specialized Italian herb garden. That’s something for you to consider.

The staff at your local nursery can help you find the right containers for the indoor garden. Be sure the containers are at least 6 to 8 inches deep and 6 to 8 inches across for each plant. If you use a larger container, group the plants 6 to 8 inches apart. Drainage is key when setting up the containers. Place screen mesh across the drainage holes at the bottom of the containers, and place the containers in a tray of gravel. Use a potting mix that drains well and is suited well to herbs and indoor use. Your local nursery or garden center will have many options, and a willing staff to help you select the right mix.

Line the containers with a layer of potting mix, and then carefully location the herbs within the mix at about the depth they were within the nursery pots. Water the herbs. Be careful about more than watering them. A thorough soaking no a lot more than twice a week ought to accomplish the trick. You are able to also supplement the potting mix with fertilizer a couple times a month. Just be certain the fertilizer is approved for use with edibles.

Before you begin to harvest you herbs give them a chance to develop new growth. Harvest by clipping the outermost leaves and sprigs when you plan to use them. Avoid over harvesting so that the herbs will last as long as possible.

You may encounter a couple of pitfalls with your indoor garden. Indoor air lacks the humidity of outdoor air and you may need to provide the herbs with added moisture by misting the leaves or adding water to the gravel-line drainage tray. You also may encounter a problem with insects. If so, fill a spray bottle tepid, soapy water and spray the leaves and stems. The soapy solution will kill off the intruders without harming the plants.

Should you follow these guidelines, you ought to be able to appreciate all the advantages of fresh, home-grown herbs, whilst basking within the accomplishment of successful gardening. Regardless of whether you think about yourself a gardener who cooks, or a cook who gardens, you’ll undoubtedly be pleased with you indoor herb garden.

Not just in the movies: a brief guide to hazardous waste

Posted on December 30th, 2010 by  |  Comments Off

It’s the prime subject of blockbuster summer films – animals eating hazardous waste and ending up as mutants terrorizing an entire neighborhood. While it’s true that hazardous waste is dangerous, as suggested by the name, films like these never really delve into what hazardous wastes really are.

In reality, there are a more than a hundred kinds of hazardous waste. Many are produced or used not in a mad scientist’s laboratory, but at manufacturing facilities where a lot of people work everyday. To help you understand what these wastes are, here’s a brief guide to hazardous waste:

Your waste is hazardous if it appears on one of the four lists of hazardous waste in the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) at 40 CFR Part 261 Subpart D (commonly called listed waste), or exhibit several characteristics of toxic waste (characteristic waste).

Currently, there are 400 kinds of hazardous waste in the RCRA list. The list includes spent cyanide plating bath solutions and pink or red water from TNT operations. Characteristic waste, meanwhile, are not on the list but exhibit the some of the same characteristics of toxic waste. These characteristics are:

  • Ignitable – these are kinds of waste that can spontaneously combust, or ignite under certain conditions like high temperature or pressure. Some examples are solvents, degreasers, oil and even certain kinds of used paint.
  • Corrosive – these are acids or bases strong enough to corrode metal used in storage tanks, containers, drums and barrels. These include battery acid, acid or alkaline cleaning fluids, and rust removers.
  • Reactive – these are unstable material that can explode or produce toxic fumes once mixed with water. Examples are explosives and lithium-sulfide batteries.
  • Toxic – these are substances that are harmful when ingested or absorbed by humans. When disposed into the land, these can leech toxic chemicals into the soil or even the groundwater. Heavy metals – such as cadmium, lead and mercury – can be found under this category.

There are two main methods to determine if waste is toxic. First is via process knowledge, which is basically the available information and data from existing publications, documented studies and other waste analysis on the specified kind of waste. By checking the existing data, it can be determined if the waste is toxic or not. The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) lists are one good example of process knowledge.

The second is the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP). Done at a laboratory, the TCLP subjects the said waste to the same conditions at a typical municipal landfill. Through this test, the leaching process of the said waste – and other effects that may occur during the leaching process – is replicated. The leachate from the waste is then analyzed, and if it contains any of the regulated contaminants at levels equal or greater than the acceptable levels, it is then considered toxic.

Of course, if your facility is unsure whether your waste is hazardous or not, it can simply call the RCRA/UST, Superfund, and EPCRA hotline at 1-800-424-9346. You can also obtain assistance from the National Chemical Manufacturers Association’s Chemical Referral Service Hotline at 1-800-262-8200.
